VR-prepared transforms emergency training into an intense VR experience.
Master life-saving in a hyper-realistic world!

VR-prepared is a VR serious game immersing citizens in disaster preparedness through realistic, varied missions that foster adaptability and essential survival skills in dynamic environments. Disasters, whether natural or human-made, affect millions globally. Despite growing awareness, many communities remain vulnerable due to gaps in preparedness. Developed in the European Union co-funded B-prepared project, VR-prepared is co-designed by gamers, software developers, volunteer firefighters, paramedics and civil protection officers as a Virtual Reality (VR) serious game, offering an immersive learning experience through a variety of disaster preparedness scenarios.

Experience Realistic Disaster Scenarios. Immerse yourself in detailed, interactive simulations of King Tide and Forest Fire events. Witness the scale and impact of these disasters firsthand within a cutting-edge VR environment.

Learn Through Active Participation. Don't just watch – act. Make critical decisions, learn to save yourself and others, stay out of harm’s way, and understand the consequences of your choices in a safe, virtual space. This active learning method enhances knowledge retention and skill development.

Engaging and Highly Effective Gamified Learning. Our serious game consists of VR scenarios and missions, turning crucial learning into an interactive and memorable experience. This approach significantly improves engagement and the effectiveness of preparedness training.

Cutting-Edge Technology, Real-World Application. Our VR simulations utilize state-of-the-art technology to create highly realistic environments and scenarios with Unreal Engine. This enables users to experience and understand disaster dynamics in a way that traditional training cannot replicate.

As a cutting-edge serious game within the B-prepared project, it is co-designed with first and second responders to revolutionize disaster preparedness training. Utilizing the power of high definition PC powered Virtual Reality, it offers an immersive and interactive platform where users can experience realistic disaster scenarios, make critical decisions, and develop essential response skills through life-saving in-game missions in a safe and controlled environment.

Forest Fire Scenario

This scenario places users in the midst of a rapidly spreading forest fire, challenging them to respond effectively to protect themselves, assist others, and mitigate damage while navigating through the fire-threatened area.

Escape sequence type scenario using linear narrative with time pressure.

King Tide Flood Scenario

This scenario simulates the conditions of a King Tide, an exceptionally high tide event that leads to significant coastal and urban flooding. Users navigate through increasingly inundated environments, making critical decisions to ensure their own safety and provide assistance to others.

Shrinking world type scenario with open-world exploration and critical objectives.

Why learn with VR-prepared?

  • Realistic Simulations: Experience meticulously designed scenarios that replicate real-world disasters, including King Tide floods and forest fires. Each scenario presents unique challenges and requires strategic problem-solving.
  • Skill Development: Master critical skills such as resuscitation, defibrillation, fire extinguishing, escape route identification, and assisting vulnerable individuals in crisis situations.
  • Safe Learning Environment: Practice responding to emergencies without the risks associated with real-world events, building confidence and competence in a virtual setting.
  • Collaborative Learning: Engage in multiplayer mode, fostering teamwork and communication as you collaborate with others to overcome challenges and achieve common goals.
  • Dynamic Gameplay: After a tutorial, there are different scenarios, e.g. King Tide or Forest Fire. Each scenario features a randomized set of missions (e.g. resuscitation, extinguishing small fires, finding an escape route, etc.), ensuring high replayability and simulating the unpredictable nature of actual disasters.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Player behavior and gameplay are logged in a privacy-preserving way, providing valuable data for assessing preparedness levels and contributing to ongoing research in the field.
  • LMS integration: demonstrated with RU-prepared, VR-prepared can seamlessly integrate with existing LMS platforms, making it an ideal content for curricula in formal education as well as informal e-learning courses.
  • Community Building and Collaboration: Participate in our virtual reality hackathon series and contribute to the development of innovative preparedness solutions. Join the open beta program and help us build a more resilient community.
  • Help those in need: After the closing of the beta, the game will be available in a freemium model where in-game purchases are replaced by in-game donations for relief organizations, with a small percentage kept for maintenance and further development.

How VR-prepared helps citizen disaster preparedness

The VR-prepared game plays a crucial role in advancing citizen disaster preparedness by ethically leveraging in-game player performance data. Our policy strictly adheres to collecting only one piece of personal data: the player’s EpicID, a unique identifier required for essential functions like logging in via the data processor, Epic Online Services. Beyond this sole personal identifier, the system collects non-personal, aggregated in-game performance data, which includes metrics such as mission completion rates, accuracy of actions, time spent on scenarios, number of attempts, and the number of players involved in a mission.

The primary purpose of gathering this detailed performance information is to continuously refine and enhance the VR-prepared experience, making the training more effective and realistic. More importantly, this data forms a vital asset for broader societal benefit: anonymized and non-personal versions of this performance data may be shared with competent authorities and research institutions. This sharing is essential because it allows experts to analyze aggregate player behavior and decision-making under duress, leading to a deeper understanding of citizen disaster preparedness gaps and the development of more effective real-world training protocols and policy improvements, thereby serving the mutual interest of the player and the company by advancing the security and sustainability of our society.

The VR-prepared experience seamlessly integrates with the larger B-prepared project, which includes a collaborative knowledge platform (Disastropedia), a learning management system (RU-prepared), and a mobile application (IM-prepared).

Together, these tools provide a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness.
